The County Executive was presented his award as the Exemplary Local Elected Official at the Comprehensive Cancer Control Awards by President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush this past Friday, November 14, at the C-Change Annual Meeting and 10th Anniversary Celebration at the George Bush Presidential Library Center in College Station, Texas.

President and Mrs. Bush have been co-chairs of the national effort and the C-Change organization since its inception ten years ago.  County Executive Steinhaus was honored with the award for his leadership in promoting and advocating Dutchess County’s Comprehensive Cancer Control initiative.   Dutchess County is the only county in New York, and one of a handful nationwide, to earmark funds to develop a comprehensive cancer control plan.

“Dutchess County’s Comprehensive Cancer Control program is designed to get everyone in our community working on the same page to move us toward our goal of reducing the risk of cancer, providing better treatment options and enhancing survivorship,” said County Executive Steinhaus.   “It is such an honor to have our efforts nationally recognized.   This award reflects the accomplishment of all of our local partners working together to fight the battle against cancer in our community but I especially want to emphasize the outstanding work of our county Health department staff and the leadership of Commissioner Michael Caldwell for their compassion and proactive efforts to address this disease.”

The Dutchess County Comprehensive Cancer Control Planning initiative was launched by County Executive Steinhaus and Dr. Caldwell in September 2006 to locally respond to the universal issues related to cancer.  The Cancer Control Consortium works to share information and resources to better promote cancer prevention, improve cancer detection, increase access to health and support services and reduce the burden of cancer.  The combined efforts will aid in helping to reduce cancer risks, detect cancers earlier, improve treatment and enhance quality of life for those touched by this disease.

C-Change is a national multi-sector cancer collaborative designed to help eliminate cancer as a significant public health threat.   Founded by President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush over a decade ago, C-Change is comprised of the nation's key cancer leaders from government, business, nonprofit, health, hospital and science sectors who share the vision of a future where cancer is prevented, detected early, and cured or is managed successfully as a chronic illness.

At Friday’s award event, County Executive Steinhaus and Governor Minner were honored along with four other organizations from across the nation for the development and implementation of quality Comprehensive Cancer Control plans.  Travel and accommodation expenses for County Executive Steinhaus and other award honorees were provided courtesy of C-Change.
