Beacon High School Health Classes Donate $2,102.41 from
“Wall of Shave for Prostate Cancer” Fundraiser

Arleen Phypers, health teacher, challenged her classes to raise $1,000 for the American Cancer Society for November’s Prostate Awareness month.  The agreement was if they could raise that amount, Principal Anthony DiMarco would shave off the mustache he has had since 1969.

In only three weeks, what started out as a single challenge, grew to having 16 teachers and staff volunteering to have their heads, beards and/or mustaches shaved.  As the list grew, so did the donations.  Babysitting money, change being collected at home, loose change of pennies and quarters came pouring in.

Besides Principal DiMarco, one of the most anticipated shave was from Earth Science teacher John Sarlo who said he hadn’t shave for about 40 years.

On the day of the event, the 124 students of Ms. Phypers classes were able to collect $2,102.41 and presented the check to American Cancer Society representative Arianna Lendino.
